Maheshwari sarees have a long and rich history that traces back to the 18th century. The weaving of these sarees began in Maheshwar, a town located on the banks of the Narmada River in Madhya Pradesh. The royal family of Holkar patronized the art of Maheshwari weaving, and the sarees were used to dress the royal family members. Over time, the art of Maheshwari weaving became popular among the common people, and today, it is considered one of the finest handloom products in India.
The interesting legend behind these sarees is of Queen Ahilyabai Holkar who ordered various craftsman and artisans from Malwa and Surat to design a special saree of 9 yards length which later came to be known as the Maheshwari saree. These sarees were supposed to be a special gift for the royal relatives and guests who visited the palace. Later on Ahilya bai Holkar has started more handlooms as an employment for the peoples of Maheshwar.
